Advanced Hiking Trails Near Punakaiki

From limestone gorges to exposed alpine ridgelines, these tracks offer the perfect blend of solitude, intensity, and stunning scenery.

They’re ideal for experienced walkers staying at Punakaiki Beach Camp who are ready to push beyond the classic day trails.

Below are three of the best advanced hikes in the area backed by DOC ratings and expert tramping resources.

 1. Inland Pack Track (Fox River → Punakaiki River)

Distance: 25 km
Time: 7-9 hours
Difficulty: Advanced

DOC recommends this track for experienced trampers, and for good reason, river crossings, limestone gorges, route-finding, and rapidly changing conditions make it a serious full-day mission.

Expect bright green pools, swing bridges, and West Coast rainforest that feels wild, ancient, and untouched.

Many people also make use of this track to access the large limestone “Ballroom Overhang” which is 12km return from the track start. This could make for a detour as part of an overnight mission or could be an alternative destination. Again, getting to the Ballroom Overhang involves good navigation skills and river crossing skills.

2. Mt Bovis Track

Distance: 8 km return
Time: 8-10 hours
Difficulty: Expert / Advanced

Accessed from Bullock Creek in Punakaiki, Mt Bovis offers terrific views in every direction, spanning the Paparoas and Tasman Sea, reminding us just how lucky we are here to have the mountains and ocean right on our doorstep.

DOC classifies Mt Bovis as an expert route, requiring fitness, experience, and confidence on steep, uneven ground.

After a steep forest climb, the route breaks onto rugged alpine tops with exposed rock scrambles and sweeping views across the Paparoa Ranges and the Tasman Sea.

Weather shifts quickly at altitude, so come prepared for wind, rain, and low visibility.

 3. Buckland Peak

Distance: 14 km return
Time: 7-1110 hours
Difficulty: Advanced

Distance: 14 km return
Time: 7–11 hours

Difficulty: Advanced

North of Punakaiki and 6.5km South from neighbouring Westport is an underrated trail, Buckland Peaks Track, offering spectacular views over the Paparoas. 10.5km in you will reach your accommodation for the night, Buckland Peak Hut, and some further hiking via an unmarked route will take you to Buckland Peak (DOC time 1 hour from hut).

DOC notes that the summit section requires strong navigation skills and decision-making, especially in sudden fog or poor visibility.

Buckland’s Peak is physically demanding, climbing from dense forest to exposed alpine ridges with dramatic granite formations and alpine flora.

This is a remote adventure with huge panoramic rewards.
