Punakaiki is wonderfully remote, and while that’s part of the charm, it does mean that stores for food and supplies are limited, so preparation is key.
Here’s your complete guide to packing essentials so you can relax, explore, and make the most of your West Coast adventure.
Set Up for Independence
Punakaiki Beach Camp encourages guests to be self-sufficient while enjoying the natural surroundings.
To make the most of your stay:
Cooking Supplies: Bring utensils, pots, pans, and camping stove if you plan to cook. Stock up on groceries beforehand as nearby shops are limited.
Food & Drinks: Pack essentials, snacks, and beverages, everything from breakfast items to picnic supplies.
Camping Gear: Tents, sleeping bags, and bedding if you’re camping, plus tarps or shade canopies for sunny days.
Extras tips:
Sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses even on cloudy days, UV is strong.
Light rain jackets Punakaiki’s weather can change quickly.
Reusable water bottles stay hydrated while exploring.
Insect repellent especially useful near the forest and river tracks.
Chargers, power banks, and flashlights for evenings at the campsite or in cabins.
Have pets? Punakaiki has some pet friendly accommodation options and walks but it’s always best to check before you arrive.
If you are unable to bring them, you could try Pet Sitting NZ who provide in-home, professional pet care.
Fun & Adventure Gear
Punakaiki is an outdoor playground. To make the most of your trip:
Beach Fun: Boogie boards, fishing gear umbrellas, and beach toys for the kids and adults alike.
Water Activities: Kayaks or stand-up paddleboards for calm river paddling. Or leave at home and hire with ease from local guides Paddle ‘n’ Carve.
Walking Essentials: Good-quality shoes for tracks and comfortable walking clothes with extra layers for changes in weather.
Know Before You Go: Maps & Walks
Planning your walks and adventures before arrival helps you enjoy your trip safely and confidently.
Walk Maps: Familiarise yourself with tracks like Pancake Rocks, Truman Track, Pororari River Track, and the Pororari–Punakaiki loop.
Safety Prep: Note track difficulty, estimated times, and any river crossings.
Activity Planning: Align your walks, kayaking, and beach time with tides and weather for the best experience. If unsure, talking to the team at the visitor centre to help plan hikes or taking a Kayak tour with Paddle ‘n’ Carve can be the best option.
Paparoa Track: If hiking or riding the Paparoa Track you can check the Mountain Safety website so to ensure you are well prepared or check for general tips for hiking in New Zealand.

By packing and preparing well, you’ll be free to enjoy everything Punakaiki has to offer: Serene beaches, scenic walks, adventurous river activities and unforgettable sunsets. With the right setup, your trip will be seamless, fun, and relaxing – exactly what a West Coast getaway should be.
